Year of the Horse Celebration 2026

February 28, 2026

A Festive Evening of Tradition, Joy, and Community

On Saturday evening, February 28th, 2026, our Montgomery Mandarin Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came together at the Seneca Stake Center to celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Horse. Nearly 120 members and friends gathered for an unforgettable evening filled with vibrant performances, interactive games, delicious food, and warm fellowship. The Year of the Horse symbolizes energy, passion, and forward momentum—qualities that perfectly captured the spirit of our celebration. From the energetic lion dance to the serene sounds of the guzheng, every moment reflected the rich tapestry of Chinese culture and the joy of coming together as a community.

Opening & Dinner

The evening began at 6:00 PM with welcoming remarks from our Branch President Zhao. Families gathered around beautifully decorated tables, enjoying a delicious dinner together before the performances began.

Lion Dance Performance

Our Young Men and Young Women kicked off the evening with an electrifying lion dance! The thundering drums, crashing cymbals, and acrobatic movements brought the lion to life, symbolizing good fortune and warding off evil spirits. The audience erupted in applause as the lion "awakened" and danced through the hall, setting a festive tone for the entire celebration.

Guzheng Performance

After the energetic opening, the atmosphere shifted to tranquility as Sister Xia Bing and her guzheng ensemble took the stage. They performed two stunning pieces: Yuan Xi, inspired by a Song Dynasty poem about the lantern festival, and Ascending the Spring Mountain, a melody celebrating the renewal of spring. The delicate, flowing notes transported us through centuries of Chinese musical tradition, leaving the audience mesmerized.

Children's Performance

Our Primary children brought boundless energy and joy to the stage with their performances of Songs and Smiles and Kung Fu Kids. Their bright faces, enthusiastic singing, and adorable movements melted hearts throughout the audience. These young performers reminded us all of the innocence and hope that children bring to every celebration.

Youth Drama: "The Horse's Portrait"

One of the evening's most creative highlight was a short play performed by our Young Men and Young Women. The story centered on a horse who desperately wanted a portrait of himself. He approached three different artists, but each could only capture one aspect of his appearance—his mane, his legs, or his powerful stance. Disappointed, the horse nearly gave up. But then the three artists decided to collaborate, combining their unique perspectives and talents. Together, they created a beautiful, complete portrait that captured the horse's true essence. This charming tale carried a powerful message: when we work together and appreciate each person's unique gifts, we can achieve something far greater than we could alone. It was a beautiful reminder of unity and collaboration—values at the heart of our community.

Choir Performance

Our choir brought the program to a moving close with two heartfelt songs: Fisherman's Song, a classical piece evoking the peaceful life of fishermen, and Unforgettable Tonight, a beloved song often performed at Chinese New Year celebrations. The harmonious voices filled the hall with warmth and nostalgia, perfectly capturing the spirit of reunion and blessing.

Interactive Game Stations

After the performances, guests were attracted to three interactive game stations, each offering a unique way to engage with Chinese culture and traditions:

Calligraphy Blessing with "Fu" (福)

Participants learned to write the Chinese character "Fu" (福), meaning fortune and happiness, using instructional videos. Each person wrote their blessing on a red sticky note and added it to our community blessing wall. The wall became a beautiful mosaic of hopes and wishes for the new year. Everyone who participated received a commemorative keychain.

Tangram Challenge

At the Tangram station, families worked together to arrange seven geometric pieces into the shape of a horse. This ancient Chinese puzzle challenged spatial reasoning and patience, making it a hit with both children and adults. Those who successfully completed the puzzle were rewarded with a mystery box!

Chinese Character Puzzle

The final station invited participants to create Chinese characters containing the "horse radical" (馬) by combining different character components printed on small cards. Players learned about the structure of Chinese writing while having fun—those who successfully formed three correct characters earned a special building block set as a prize.

Special Thanks

This celebration would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of so many individuals:

Brother Wei and Sister Deng served as the primary coordinators for the entire event, managing everything from program planning to gift procurement. They even arranged for beautiful Year of the Horse gifts to be shipped from China for our games!

The Youth of the Branch opened the Lunar Celebration with a thunderous drum to wake up the Lions dancing from the back of the room into the front. The invigorated lions bowed to each other and then to the guests dancing each step of the way.

Sister Xia Bing and her GuZheng class with their beautiful dresses and amazing synchronized performance. Their music echoed wall to wall of vibrant historical power.

The Frewin Family and Sister Sophy Fugal transformed the Seneca Stake Center into a festive wonderland with their stunning table decorations. Their attention to detail created a warm and beautiful atmosphere that made everyone feel welcome and celebrated.

All performers, volunteers, and families who contributed their time, talents, and enthusiasm —- thank you for making this evening truly unforgettable!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening. Here's to a year filled with blessings, growth, and joy! Happy Year of the Horse! 🐴🧧
