Relief Society Activity

Saturday Evening Sisters Group Activity

--Li-Fang Tsai

At 6pm on January 12, 2012, the Chinese Branch sisters of the Washington DC Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met together in the Fugal home for the first time to participate in group craft activities. The purpose of this activity was to provide the sisters an opportunity to relieve the pressures of life and to promote sisterhood by laughing together and meeting new friends.

This event will take place from 6pm to 8pm every Saturday in the Fugal home throughout the whole every week, except for weeks with Chinese New Year party, stake conferences, Christmas party, or when teachers are unable to attend.

On January 12 at the first Relief Society group activity, sisters arranged beads into beautiful lovely bracelet. At the same time, they laughed because they realized that they had completely forgotten that they had learned this craft in middle school, albeit in different environments, in different eras. Nevertheless, in different periods, they had learned similar crafts, thus definitely eliminating any differences that might have previously existed.

The attendees included Sophy Fugal and her mother, Charlotte Shen, Yiqing Jin, Li-Fang Tsai, Meili Shen, Abbey Zhao, Angel Chou, Jane Tsai, and others. Next week, Sophy's mother will teach how to knit a woolen shawl. This project may take several weeks to complete. Interested people should bring their own needles and thread. Sister Tsai has extra knitting needles and yarn that can be borrowed.

Future Relief Society Activities

Spring: (March) - Dinner, scripture story
Summer: (May) - Mother's Day gift making
Fall: (September) - Service activity
Winter: (November) - Missionary activity

"Why I Believe"

In 2013, the months of March, June, September, and December have a fifth Sunday. On these Sundays, the Relief Society will invite some brothers or sisters to share their conversion stories. The Relief Society will also prepare paper for sisters to write down how you can come into contact with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, how you accepted the gospel of Christ, and how you joined the church. Sisters in pursuit of this eternal truth will also be expected to share with us your feelings about the gospel.

2012 Christmas Party

This year, since the Kentlands Ward held their Christmas party a week earlier at the Foulger Farm, our branch was left to set up all of the decorations at the chapel. After intense preparation, the Christmas trees were set up in the foyers, and the lights and wreaths were strung along the walls of the cultural hall. Brother Jeremy Bates, a new member in our branch, was asked to plan the Christmas party. Elder McLane emceed the evening's event. After a delectable dinner, the program featured a return of the Nativity reenactment. Primary children and the young men acted as shepherds and wise men. Brother and Sister Ly were perfect as Joseph and Mary with their new baby son, Jacob. This year's play starred Richard Huang as King Herod. As an added surprise, an angel appeared from above with a trumpet to help announce the Savior's birth.

The young women presented their own version of the Grinch, set to Chipmunk-like Christmas music. Although the Grinch attempted to ruin Christmas by destroying presents and trees, the inhabitants of Whoville were still very happy in their celebration of Christmas. Afterwards, the Relief Society sang a hymn for us.

This year, we did something never before tried in our branch. After Santa's appearance, a dozen tables were prepared for eager participants to create the best gingerbread houses out of basic ingredients: graham crackers, marshmallows, sprinkles, gum drops, M&Ms, plates, and aluminum foil. Everyone had fun making the sweet gingerbread houses. Thanks to all for their hard work. Merry Christmas to all!

Primary Christmas Activity

About 17 children came to the chapel to participate in the Primary Christmas activity.  Four stations were set up with special activities.  The stations included Pin the Nose on Rudolph, Pingpong Ball Toss, Paper Christmas Tree Decoration, and a Paper Wreath.  Afterwards, everyone indulged in the sweet refreshments, which included delicious cupcakes, candy canes, egg nog, milk, and chocolate chip cookies.  All were well rewarded for attending.
