2018-09 Moon Festival Celebration

"The Water Song" by Shi Su

When will the moon be clear and bright?
With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the clear sky.
In the heavens on this night,
I wonder what season it would be.

I'd like to ride the wind to fly home.
Yet I fear the crystal and jade mansions
are much too high and cold for me.
Dancing with my moonlit shadow,
It does not seem like the human world.

The moon rounds the red mansion,
Stoops to silk-pad doors,
Shines upon the sleepless,
Bearing no grudge,
Why does the moon tend to be full when people are apart?

People experience sorrow, joy, separation and reunion,
The moon may be dim or bright, round or crescent shaped,
This imperfection has been going on since the beginning of time.
May we all be blessed with longevity,
Though thousands of miles apart,
we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together.

This classic poem reflects the theme of tonight's moon festival activity and was the inspiration behind the popular song sung written by Li Jun Deng and performed by Clayton Zhao on his violin. Brother Wesley Wei and Elder Anderson were the emcees for this evening. President Huang offered the invocation and blessing on the food. Over 100 people attended this evening. Besides the main dishes provided by the branch, attendees brought dishes of soup, American food, Chinese food, dessert, and moon cakes. The food was plenty and simply delicious.

After dinner, Clayton performed "The Water Song" on his violin. The 4 missionaries presented the story of Hou Yi and Chang E in shadow puppet form using the overhead projector. Jessie Li and Ethan Wang served as narrators. Finally, the branch choir sang "He Tang Yue Se."

Afterwards, everyone engaged in cleanup. Tonight we met many old friends and some new ones. Some friends came from far away, such as Joseph and Audri Cunningham from Blacksburg, VA. Some lived very close, such as Ross Johnson from the Montgomery Village Ward and his wife Ling Dong. It was great to hobnob with previous members of the branch, such as the Bates', Fox's, Groberg's, Munk's, and so many others. It was truly a family event filled with fun and food and rekindling old memories. Thanks to Wesley and Yangyang Wei for organizing this event.
