On a crisp cold evening in February, the Montgomery Chinese Branch celebrated the Lunar New Year party at the Washington DC Stake Center. About 150 people filled the cultural hall. Drew and Jenny Smith emceed the program tonight. President Huang welcomed everyone to the party. The first hour was dedicated to the enjoyment of the food and socializing with friends.
The lion dance kicked off the program. The lions carried by Richard Huang, Isaiah Shen, Henri Ly, and Brennan Zhao were accompanied by Kevin Wu on the drum. Clayton Zhao played a solo on his violin entitled "Congratulations to the New Year." Elders Chang and Statham display shadow puppets while Yiheng Wang and her husband Yang Yang narrated the story of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. Brother Mingshu Zhang played "The Fernleaf Hedge Bamboo under the Moonlight" on the traditional Chinese gourd instrument (Cucurbit flute). Young girls danced "Large Delightful New Year Gathering." Cynthia Zhan played "Swangoose" on her violin. Our branch choir then sang two songs: "Yao Mountain Night Song" and "Temple Fair." The finale was a group dance activity where the whole audience danced to New Year music.
Seeing old friends and meeting new ones warmed up our hearts. We thoroughly enjoyed the variety of food and desserts. The program helped us to celebrate and remember our Chinese culture. Welcome all to the Year of the Pig!
