For the first time in the branch's history, the Branch 2024 Chinese New Year Celebration took place at the Seneca Stake Center in Germantown MD. This historical event was organized by Charles and Sara Huang. They coordinated the event with the Twin Lakes Mandarin Branch. After almost 2 months of preparation, the setup and rehearsal was held on the evening of Friday, February 16, 2024. The celebration officially began at 5pm on Saturday, February 17. For the first half hour, guests arrived to mingle and to participate in crafts. At about 5:30pm, the emcees, Wesley Wei and Lizhong Huang, welcomed everyone and started off the evening with a blessing on the food. The two branch presidents, Da Zhao (Montgomery) and Sam Meng 孟慶延 (Twin Lakes), provided a few remarks.
The sound effects were prepared by Li-Fang Tsai, and the computer AV assistance was provided by Greg Ly. After an hour of what Chinese folks and friends do best by eating and talking, the beating of the drum invited the two lions to enter the cultural hall and dance around the room. The lion dance performers were Clayton Zhao, Daniel Ly, Elder Edlefsen, and Elder Whisenant, led by drummer Jonathan Tsai, cymbal Cayleigh Zhao, and gong Jacob Ly. The Qianrong Dance Company 千荣舞蹈团 then performed the Jasmine Dance 茉莉花舞蹈. The Elders Quorum hosted a special new year poem recital, read by Wesley Wei, Andrew Shen, Mindy and Greg Ly, Tamara Woolf, and Jerome Anderson. Sister Su from the Twin Lakes Mandarin Branch played a piece on the cello. This was followed by two guzheng songs (Preface to Orchid Pavilion 兰亭序, Spring Festival Overture 春节序曲) performed Sister Xia Bing's 夏冰 guzheng students: Yashar Garzan, Qingyun Hu 胡卿云, Melody Chen 陈沅媛, Emma Shi 石歆瑜, Tongtong Li Li Xiaotong 李晓潼, Sarah Zhao 赵小雅, and Jocelyn Yuan 袁子媛. Next, the 8 full-time missionaries from the two Mandarin Branches gave a spiritual message. The missionaries were Elders Edlefsen and Whisenant (Montgomery) and Elders Si, An, Pan, Bu, Lei, and Zhu (Twin Lakes). Sister Liu Shucheng 劉淑澄 danced the Northeastern Yangge-Lullaby, Hope 東北秧歌-搖籃曲,盼. Next, Clark Yu from the Twin Lakes Mandarin Branch performed a song on the violin, followed by a few numbers by the Youth String Orchestra. Then Athena played a song on the flute 橫笛 entitled I Only Care about You 我只在乎你. The Relief Society conducted a guessing game about songs from long ago. Prizes were awarded for correct answers. The final number were two songs (Where is Heaven?, 春節序曲) performed by the Montgomery Branch choir and members of the Huaxia Choir under the direction of Li-Fang Tsai and accompanied by Yangyang Deng.
With this historical Chinese New Year celebration, this was the first time since COVID began in 2020 for a branch gathering with more than 200 attendees. Seeing so many friends brought back many memories of former Chinese New Year celebrations long ago. We are grateful to the branch presidency and Charles and Sara and all of the many members who helped to make this a memorable celebration. Happy Luna New Year of the Dragon!
